Forget forever chemicals! PFAS-free alternatives launched
PFAS is a class of chemical used in many everyday products and has been present in paper food packaging since the 70’s – including compostables! Starting in 2019, we’ve worked with our manufacturers to find practical alternatives and source new materials to help keep these chemicals out of our compost.

2021

The Compostable Field Testing Program gets a makeover
Working with our US non-profit partner the Compost Research & Education Foundation, we received our first grant from the 11th Hour Project to jumpstart the next phase of the Compostable Field Testing Program!

2022

A new era of open-source for field testing data on compostable products.

Thanks to the support of the 11th Hour Foundation, we began working with the University of Chicago’s Data Sciences Institute on compiling and preparing a decade of field testing data for publication on a global stage.

We also joined ASTM International, a standard-creating body, and began collaborating cross-sector to turn the field test protocols we’d grown under the CFTP into standardized, public, and internationally relevant test methods.

2023

Partnering with Closed Loop Partners on a one-of-a-kind Disintegration Study

Working cross-border under the Compostable Field Testing Program, we stepped up to the plate when the Composting Consortium, an initiative led by Closed Loop Partners Center for the Circular Economy, was looking for experts to design and run a broad-scale study on compostable packaging disintegration in real-world compost sites. We supported all stages of this research in collaboration with RRS, provided the tried-and-refined field test methods and supported in analyzing and reporting on the data.

And, BSIbio moved for the first time in 19 years, to our new location: 8949 Shaughnessy Street, Vancouver, BC.

2024

Spreading our field testing research to global and provincial audiences

What a huge year! For the first time, organizations across North America who field test compostable products in real-world compost facilities presented at the annual COMPOST conference. Our team presented the preliminary data from the CFTP both at this conference and on a special webinar with the Coast Waste Management Association.

Then, in fall 2024, thanks to a partnership with the, we launched CompostableTesting.org the first-ever open-source dashboard to explore real-world field testing data! Read more about this in our Biocycle article.

2025

Spreading the word – compostable products DO break down, under the right conditions

We presented at the world’s largest compost conference, COMPOST2025, held in Pheonix, Arizona, and began a series of BioCycle articles explaining the role of field testing for compostable products.
