Did you know there are over 125 farmers markets throughout British Columbia?! Vancouver is lucky to be home to some awesome farmers markets and food co-cops. With the sun finally gracing the city with his presence, it’s time for Vancouverites to eat, play and SHOP outside!

Here’s a list of some of the most popular (plus some not so well-known) farmers markets and food co-ops that you should definitely check out!

1. Support B.C. Farmers & Businesses: Vancouver Farmers Markets

As summer creeps closer, Vancouver Farmers Markets are sprouting up around the city to supply our neighbourhoods with produce, poultry, baked goodies, arts & crafts, massages and much more. And all from BC farmers and small businesses! These markets open once a week (dates vary) until the fall.

Last weekend, the Trout Lake Farmers Market opened. This weekend will be the opening date of the Kitsilano Farmers Market – check out their website for hours and other locations.

If you need your Farmers Market fix during the winter, don’t despair! There is also a Winter Farmers Market (by Nat Baily Stadium) and the annual Christmas Market!

2. A Wednesday Evening Market: Oak Street Farmers Market

Most Farmers Markets run mid-day on weekends, but the Oak Street Farmers Market will be held every Wednesday from 3pm to 7pm. The market proudly offers “local and organic produce and the yummiest prepared foods!”…Our pro tip: Don’t ruin your dinner by snacking while shopping!

Mark your calendars! Oak Street Farmers Market will launch June 1st with a Grand Opening Celebration, featuring a program of musical performances. Don’t miss the speeches by Andrea Reeimer (Vancouver City Councilor), Rex Weyler (Greenpeace International Founder and Author) and Mary Forstbauer (Organic Farming Leader)!

3. Organic & BC-Grown: Home Grow-In Cambie Market

Located on Cambie Street by West 14th Ave, the Home Grow-In Cambie Market opened earlier this year. Their mission? To serve the community with only freshorganic and BC-grown produce. This market joins the family of other Home Grow-In divisions – Wholesaler and Buyer’s Coop.

Open throughout the year

The Home Grow-In Cambie Market is an indoor retail market. That means it’s open 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year!

4. Beyond Vancouver: BC Association of Farmers’ Markets

Not living in Metro Vancouver? No problem, the BCAFM has an extensive list of markets in the province. All the produce, foods and crafts at these markets are locally grown or made (Score!). Check out the full listing – with more than 125 Farmers Markets, there must be one near you!

5. One of the First: East End Food Co-op

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the East End Food Co-op. They’re the only consumer-owned grocery store in Vancouver since 1975! Operating similarly to your conventional grocer, the Co-op is open 7 days a week (9am to 9pm).

Here, members can vote for the board, have a say on what goes on shelves and qualify for a year-round discount. The Co-op proudly supports local farmers, vendors and businesses, as well as shares profits with the community.
